Blank Spots on the Map

Joanne reviews (almost breathlessly and with a few "um"s and "uh"s to show I'm not perfect!) Trevor Paglen's latest book that discusses the places the US military has suspected or confirmed secret activities taking place. I really enjoy maps, I would've liked more maps, but was still held captive by the intriguing info presented here.

I actually prefer this more elemental, back-to-basics Bond myself. But if there's something the Bond franchise could never have enough of, it's beautiful women with gadgets!

When you flashed the map of the world whereTrevor Paglen had done his investigating it seemed that New Zealand was not there. I was wondering if the whole of the country is a blank spot or it is all clear of yankee hell holes. I wonder what other countries were missing from the map!

I've noticed that on Google Earth. There are places which you cannot see properly because they're camouflaged or coloured out. Many of these places are high up in mountain ranges. It's really weird because the surrounding, lower lying areas are perfectly clear, yet the tops of these mountains appear unnaturally blurred.

I just finished reading this fine book by this semi-local geographer. I agree with Joanne that I would've liked to see a few more maps. But, it actually wasn't necessary. I've been eating up all the info and history in this book as well as History Channel's different documentaries have been saying about places like "Dugway Proving Grounds". This book brought up how the CIA was voted into existance by Congress without them even being able to read the entire bill. As most of it was classified.
