people never realize how close of a bond the dog handlers have with their dogs. i feel bad for that dog because he lost the most important thing in his life, his master and his best friend. i know i miss my MWD but he did his job and got me home safely i just wish i could pet him one more time :( and i thank CPL Lee for what he had to give and i'm sorry for the family that had to feel that loss.

Sorry for your loss. You all are truly an inspiration

@jw13303 the dog deserves every right to earn a purple heart, this is just my opinion cause they are a part of the military as well, so if a human can get one a military working dog should be able to get one also

I am grateful for the freedom and opportunities your son has given us through his and your sacrifices. I am sorry for your sorrow and loss.

Thanks for this patriotic, brave, and heart-warming story about two truly excellent, American heroes.. I think it's fine that a MWD is awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze or Silver Stars, the Navy Cross, or even the Medal of Honor. The MWD K-9s are just as much an American soldier as any human. I am a former Marine LRRPs forward observer/sniper and worked closely with the MWD GSDs in VietNam, out of DaNang. Lex and other MWDs like him deserve full credit for saving so many lives, like me.

I miss him so much! I am so thankful that while he was in Albany, Ga I had the honor of getting to know such a wonderful person. He is greatly missed in Albany, as I know he is at home.

What a sad, yet inspiring story. God bless the Lee family for adopting son Dustin's wartime partner, and the work they do with him now. This is a beautifully arranged and told story. My condolences to the Lee family for their loss.

I think its cool that the family adopted the k-9..
BUT I dont believe a DOG should recieve a Purple Heart. Sorry..

It was not an actual PH as what is legislated by Congress, BUT only a commemorative award to thank the family for their son's sacrifice and to thank the canine for trying to protect his partner till the end.
But thank you for your opinion.
Thank you all for your comments!
