Ship sunk off Europa Point, Gibraltar - Update

The stricken cargo vessel New Flame sunk over 10 months ago. Salvage operations were hampered by heavy storms which broke the ship in two. Salvage operations have recommenced.

Not true! Talk about double standards... Spain continue polluting the whole Campo area with the refinery but the Spanish authorities do nothing about that.

the oil in the ship has reached spain's shores and you can even see the black oil on the sand

There was no oil onboard the ship. The fuel was all pumped out, what was washed up was sludge and residue which clings to the inside of the tanks, very regretable I must say. I also wish the wreck was not there as it is one of the best fishing marks around.Bad weather has played the biggest part in removing the wreck.

Last time i was in the "rock" was the April 2010 for bunkering,sometime the traffic is a bitch........

A qué llamas "eliminar"? es para tí sinónimo de "hundir"? No defiendas lo indefendible. Gibraltar no actuó bien con el New Flame. España tampoco actúa bien con refinería. A mí me preocupa la contaminación en general ya que, por desgracia, he vivido el cáncer desde muy cerca...Yo no defiendo a España porque sea mi país, si no hace las cosas bien las denuncio igualmente, como hago con Gibraltar, porque no actuó bien en ese caso...

El 'New Flame' se ha eliminado. Su más. No hubo contaminación Sin embargo, la refinería de CEPSA español va a provocar el cáncer durante mucho tiempo.

Gibraltar no es una colonia.

@aliciabernaldo llevas toda la razón. Gibraltar gestiona las aguas de su alrededor como le dá la gana (sobre todo para la práctica del bunkering), se lleva los beneficios, pero a la hora de la verdad, cuando ocurre uno de estos desastres, la situación LES SUPERA, no son capaces de responder. La prueba ahí está, el barco estuvo allí más de un año y lo único que hicieron fue esperar a que se hundiera...VERGONZOSO

@JimWatt el Gobierno de Gibraltar solo esperó a que el barco se hundiera...más de un año estuvo ahí...España, por desgracia, tiene muchísima culpa de la contaminación que se sufre en este área, pero Gibraltar contribuye de manera enorme. No es normal que una colonia tan pequeñísima como Gibraltar genere tantísima contaminación, sobre todo en el mar. Todo el bunkering que se sufre en esta zona es por culpa de Gibraltar que, además, no tiene aguas cuando no le conviene...

Absolute nonsense, the Government of Gibraltar acted from the beginning of the accident and pumped out all the fuel oil. Then they appointed a world class salvage company to deal with the wreck.

perhaps the oil you refer to comes from the CEPSA refinery, in Spain.
