This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS2.

This game is just a really good game. This is another one that I'm kicking myself for not paying attention to sooner. I just figured it was just another of the many platformers from last gen.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy does indeed have platformer elements in it, and could possibly be classified as a platformer, but it's really a mix of platformer conventions, and Zelda design. That's the best way I can put it. Sphinx controls and moves like a platformer hero does, but he's stuck in a world of Action/adventure, exploration, and dungeons like Link. It's a really good match up, and the game mixes the elements of the two genres perfectly.

Throughout the game, you'll also be controlling the said "Cursed Mummy." These scenes are really well designed, and downright hilarious at times. The mummy is invincible, so he's capable of doing things that no mortal can. The designers used this element really well throughout the mummy scenes by crafting well thought out puzzles to take advantage of the mummy's abilities.

Like many games of this type, it's not always clear what to do next. Sometimes you just wander around until you stumble upon what to do next. The camera, also, doesn't always give you the best angle on the action, or for jumping causing the occasional frustrating death. Also, when you die you have to reload from the last save point. It's not like Zelda where you can just start back from the beginning of the dungeon or something. This can sometimes lead to frustration when you have to replay parts of the game.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is also available on the Gamecube, and the Xbox.
