What was actually more amazing about her victory was she did not steal the race on the front end and the leaders were going pretty slow yet she still outgunned them all to the wire. Rumbo was flying down the stretch and she looked like she might get caught 1/2 way to the finish but she turned it on and still prevailed by a length. I remember watching that race yelling go girl go! So much for the gals can't beat the boys.

That was Jim McKay in the beginning. She is one of the all-time greats. I remember watching this derby when I was a kid and was absolutely shocked when I saw her in front turning for home. Couldn't believe she was as good as the boys because she was so small, but she had the heart of a true champion.

Yes... I still have that SI. A beautiful Genuine Risk photographed with the headline

" THE LADY IS A CHAMP "

She really was, too. What happened to her in the Preakness turned into a little bit of payback for Lukas. His horse Codex interfered w/Gennie and 8 years later the Lukas filly Winning Colors was bounced around by Forty-Niner. A shame for both fillies. They had such tremendous heart.

Don't forget Lady's Secret, Secretariat's daughter and the first mare to be named horse of the year. She beat the best male horses in the country 4 times and won 8 grade 1 stakes in a single season - no other horse has done that. Also Go For Wand, the sensational 2 & 3 year old filly who to say had heart would be a tremendous understatement. She fell and broke her ankle in the 1990 Breeders Cup stretch, but got up and finished the race being being euthanized on the track.

Don't forget Lady's Secret, Secretariat's horse of the year daughter who beat the boys 4 times and who died in 2003, or Go For Wand, the sensational 2 & 3 year old filly who broke her ankle in the 1990 Breeders cup distaff in the stretch, but got up and finished the race with the broken leg before being euthanized on the track. They were great champions and both are on the blood-horse list top 100 thoroughbreds of all time.
