THE STORY

Upon cold earthen rock in anguish sits
In gaze unmoved in hushed repose
A lover now in battle fallen leaves
His blood to stain a once white rose.

"Few know," he says choking back a tear. "I was wounded in battle. He saved me." He forces a smile. "It's when we first met . . . the moment our friendship began the moment . . . the first time my heart felt love." He gently pulls a bloody petal from the rose and watches motionless as the wind lifts it from his fingertips and sets it on its winged flight. "They called him back and i begged him not to go. But he said they are coming . . . if we fail . . . if we fall our world falls . . . and a dark cloud will rise in its place . . . a place where our love will be forever forbidden. Where our special love . . . the love one man has for another man will be scorned . . . and their hate will hang like a smokey death in the air . . suffocating the living." He glances heavenward. "He held me in his arms on the day he left . . . the day he took my heart with him. And his last words to me . . . i go . . . so we can be together."

ABOUT THE VIDEO

The inspiration for this video began with a question: was it possible through the use of photographs to create a story using only one type of art - in this case statues? I began with over 300 photos of every type of statue from every country and museum. As i began to trim away various photos a vision of certain statues stood out - and upon viewing them in repetition - it was only then i begin to formulate the story here told. This story of love - of love lost - and of a fateful decision to reunite is not unique - yet as long as the heart of one man yearns for that of another - such narratives remain eternal.

The effects used in the video identify the stages of the story itself. For instance, when our lover looks back over his life - a "dream-like" haze is applied to the photos while a "cross blur" is used in their transition. As for the music one would think its choice would be the most difficult - but in reality - it preceded the process (as it so often does in many of my videos). Here I searched for music that involved melodic movements that swelled to dramatic effect. The words are not as important (although in this case have relevancy to the use of flowers - an idea taken from the lyrics and incorporated into the video), as the emotional impact created by the music itself. By arranging the photos in sequence to create a story - they also needed to be matched with the music's particular movements. In so doing I hope to have succeeded in creating within the viewer that swell of emotion that one would associate with the emotions of our lover himself. This video was created 20 May 2010.

THE MUSIC

From the opera LOUISE (Gustave Charpentier - composer). The aria is 'Depuis Le Jour' performed by Montserrat Caballé (soprano)
