I know this is an unrelated and slightly random question from a Brit here, but... do you yanks actually use the word "mates"? Don't think I've ever heard an american say that word. In the UK and elswhere (like Australia), yeah, we use that word all the time. But in USA, never heard it. Mind you I've never been to USA. Met plenty yanks of course. Never heard them say mates.
