Ulcerate's latest album might not hit the spot for fans of the New Zealand group's more hectic material, but it definitely resonated with me. The relentless drumming and dissonant guitar passages create an ugly atmosphere that's ever-evolving. These guys display an extreme level of technical precision on each of these seven tracks, but the music isn't so flashy that it loses me. In fact, that precision manifests itself into a ton of interplay and some sick grooves that are almost too dizzying to follow.

It's a solid metal album. I may not be completely down with how it was mixed, but the performances are absolutely stellar. Definitely a heavy treat.

What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next?

7/10

  • I'm not a huge metalhead but I think Ulcerate have been robbed by this review. I've seen them perform this stuff live, as well as their older stuff, and have to say they are a mindblowing band.

This is death metal for ISIS fans, and i think they deserved an strong 8 / light 9 for this effort.

This is not a pedestrian 7/10 album at all. This is fine art.

  • Technical, but not showing off.

Definitely a grower, but it gives you quite a great experience.

  • @kbillysupersounds

LOL, this is by far better than Isis.

  • I am normally not a fan of technical death metal, but Ulcerate can make riffs that kills. As dissonant as Immolation x 10

  • @tiglatpilesar9 I think it's an album for fans of the band that you mentioned but people who enjoy Isis, Neurosis and similar bands would enjoy it as well...

  • This is death metal for Gorguts, Immolation and maybe for DsO fans.

    Not for Isis pussy lovers.

  • @kbillysupersounds seven is a really good score dude. You need to understand how things are graded. Its a curve.

  • @kbillysupersounds I got it once I read "Death Metal for ISIS fans".

  • @RobboElRobbo Disgusting [in a bad sense that is].

Aesthetically empty wankery. Ulcerate are on a totally different level.

  • "Everything is Fire is a once in a life masterpiece" +1

  • If you listen to Everything is Fire you can hear the "atmosludge" or whatever you want to call it influence. This was a pretty natural progression in my opinion, and although it is a pretty good album, I enjoyed Everything is Fire a lot more.

  • Killer record. One of the best of 2011.
