Riding Amtrak Southwest Chief Train #4, Pt 3

10-13 and 10-14-10, returning from CA to MO on the Southwest Chief on the second half of my round trip. This clip has shots of CO and KS.

Just before sunrise in KS, the train hit debris on the tracks which caused cabling damage between the front of the train and the sleepers and brought the train to a stop. No specifics were mentioned, but all sorts of rumors flew about what we hit, including a cow or group of cows (we were in the middle of very rural KS). We were under emergency power for over three hours. Watched the sunrise come up from the dining car with some newly found friends. We were already an hour behind when this happened, so after BNSF personnel reached the train to make temporary repairs, we started rolling again only four hours behind schedule.

I was happy for the delay because I had a nine hour layover in KC and sitting in my roomette vs the Union Station was fine by me. This was my first train trip and I loved every moment of it. Hoping to do another trip this next year.
