Please enjoy Teresa's performance of "寝物語を聴かせて (Nemonogatari wo Kikasete)", meaning "Let me listen to pillow talk". 三木たかし (Miki Takashi) composed, and 飛澤宏元 (Tobisawa Hiromoto) and 平野孝幸 (Hirano Takayuki) arranged the song. 荒木とよひさ (Araki Toyohisa) wrote the lyrics.

The following are the Japanese lyrics, with my English translation.

あなたしか愛せない
Anata shika aisenai
(I can love except you)

誰かと恋をしても
Dareka to koi wo shitemo
(Even if I fall in love with other person,)

最後はいつも 何かがちがう
Saigo wa itsumo nanika ga chigau
(something is always different in the end)

どんなに いい人だって
Donnani ii hito datte
(although he may be a good person)

悲しみの 身代りに
Kanashimi no migawari ni
(Instead of selecting tomorrow)

あしたを選ぶよりも
Ashita wo erabu yorimo
(at cost of sadness,)

心の中に あなたがいれば
Kokoro no naka ni anata ga ireba
(your presence in my heart is)

それで いいはずよ
Sorede ii hazuyo
(just sufficient)

愛されたこと
Aisareta koto
(If what I was loved)

それも夢なら
Sore mo yume nara
(was a dream,)

想い出だけで いいから
Omoide dake de iikara
(only that memory is sufficient)

あの日のように 優しく抱いて
Anohi no youni yasashiku daite
(Please hold me tenderly as you did on that day)

そして寝物語を 私に聴かせて
Soshite nemonogatari wo watashi ni kikasete
(and let me listen to your pillow talk)

昨日しか愛せない
Kinou shika aisenai
(I can love except yesterday)

涙が枯れた今も
Namida ga kareta ima mo
(Even after my tears are dried,)

うぬぼれだけど あなたのことは
Unubore dakedo anata no koto wa
(I know you best,)

一番知ってる つもり
Ichiban shitteru tsumori
(although this may be my egoism)

悲しみと幸福を
Kanashimi to shiawase wo
(If I can share)

仲良しに出來るなら
Nakayoshi ni dekiru nara
(both sadness and happiness,)

涙の中のあなたと暮す
Namida no naka no anata to kurasu
(I live with you in tears)

それで いいはずよ
Sorede ii hazuyo
(That is sufficient)

生きていること
Ikiteiru koto
(I keep living in this world)

それも夢なら
Soremo yume nara
(If this is also a dream,)

振り向くだけでいいから
Furimuku dake de iikara
(please just look back at me)

あの日のように 優しく抱いて
Anohi no youni yasashiku daite
(Please hold me tenderly as you did on that day)

そして寝物語を 私に聴かせて
Soshite nemonogatari wo watashi ni kikasete
(and let me listen to your pillow talk)

あの日のように 優しく抱いて
Anohi no youni yasashiku daite
(Please hold me tenderly as you did on that day)

そして寝物語を 私に聴かせて
Soshite nemonogatari wo watashi ni kikasete
(and let me listen to your pillow talk)

  • Masami-san: I fully understand your dilemma. My problem - like most non-Japanese viewers - is that we are trying to see the beautiful Fuji mts on a very foggy day and without proper eyeglasses! :-) Good communication, in this case translation, is indeed hard!

I will continue to strive for the ideal and will try harder next time.

  • It is ideal to meet both Truth & Beauty.

I selected the former in many cases, but this may not satisfy the readers of the lyrics. I always have dilemma.

  • Thx for your explanation, Masami-san.

I do appreciate your difficulty - as faced by all dedicated interpreters, but leaving the viewers confused on what the lyricist is trying to say (at the English end) may not be the lesser of two evils either.

These days I can understand the position Ezra Pound took in translating Japanese poetry, that a perfect rendition is often impossible, hence some compromises are necessary. - Truth or beauty?

  • A second translation from the first translation will certainly be more comfortable to read and understand, but I am afraid of losing the original meanings given by each phrase.

For example 誰かと恋をしても 最後はいつも 何かがちがう どんなに いい人だって makes one sentence. The second translation gives a different understanding.

  • Many Japanese lyrics are sometimes difficult to understand even for Japanese people. In such cases, we try to understand what the original lyricist wanted to say from between the lines. There are many ambiguous and implicit wordings. I have so far dared not to interpret in my own way but left the readers to imagine what is really meant from the original lyrics.

  • Thank you for your interpretation.

When I translate Japanese lyrics in YouTube, I usually try to convey original meanings of the original Japanese phrases as far as possible. This often fails to transfer the message of the lyrics to non-Japanese speaking people.

  • This song is so hauntingly beautiful that I can't get its melody (esp the violin solo at the very end) out of my mind. The lyric, however, didn't make very much sense to me, so I "massaged" Masami-san's literal translation into the version below. Hope Masami-san would be tolerant to my literal transgression.

Teresa, as always, has sung it perfectly!

  • (2/2) - Sorry, the other is (1/2) Yesterday was the only time I could love, Because I knew you so very well. Even if my eyes are dry now, I will live with the memory of you in tears. Having known you even in dream - is enough, To face lifes joy and melancholy with equanimity. Turn and look back at me, I will be solaced in living with that memory. Please hold me tenderly in your arms and Tell me the sweet nothings, As you did on that day.
  • (2/2) You are the only person I can love in this world, Because you are good to me. Even if I should fall in love with someone else, You will always be the special one for me. Having you in my heart is enough To look forward to tomorrow without melancholy. If your love for me is just a dream, I will be solaced in living with that memory. Please hold me tenderly in your arms and Tell me the sweet nothings, As you did on that day.
  • Thx for directing me to this video, Masami-san. It's beautiful!

Yet another 三木/荒木 joint effort - no wonder the lyric is so haunting and Teresa's singing fully expresses that sad, untenable longing!

"Even if your love for me was just a dream, I would be more than glad for that memory." - Had a love like that; still cherish the unforgettable bitter-sweet memories, still love her. Better to have loved and lost than not loved at all!?!
