Construction work is in progress on the Oluvil Harbour which is being undertaken under the 10-year Mahinda Chintana programme to build a new Sri Lanka.
The Oluvil Harbour is being newly constructed in the Ampara District. The work is being accelerated. 40 percent of the work has already been completed. It is of special importance to the Commerce and Fisheries sectors.
Under the first stage, a ship weighing 5000 tons can be anchored at this commercial Harbour. The breakwater is 1520 metres long. The Harbour spans 1000 hectares.
Project Engineer M.T. Fawmy said they expect to complete the entire construction of the Oluvil Harbour by next year. He pointed out that it will be of immense benefit to fishermen using multi-day trawlers with the Eastern Sea.
