KFC has found itself in an awkward situation after an Australian ad campaign made its way to YouTube sparking accusations of racism from its American audience, Australian media outlet Adelaide Now reported.

The Aussie "Cricket Survival Guide" commercial shows a white man in a crowd of cheering black cricket fans. The Australian fan, named Mick, asks "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward s More..ituation?" and then hands a bucket of KFC fried chicken to the black fans.

The YouTube video had more than 250,000 views Wednesday afternoon and viewers left more than 3,300 comments. In the video's description on YouTube, the poster "ThunderCurls" writes: "How do you survive a crowd of "awkward" black people? According to KFCs latest advertisement a bucket of fried chicken will do the trick. Is this racist? You be the judge..."

KFC Australia told Adelaide Now that while the ad could be perceived as racist, it was misunderstood by the American audience.

"It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team," the company said in a statement. "The ad was reproduced online in the U.S. without KFC's permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism.

"We unequivocally condemn discrimination of any type and have a proud history as one of the world's leading employers for diversity."

KFC Australia announced to Slashfood Wednesday afternoon it is "removing the television advertisement that was being run in conjunction with the Australian cricket season. We apologize for any misinterpretation of the ad as it was not meant to offend anyone."

  • It's not racist, the akward situation is an Aussie cricket supporter surrounded by west Indian fans, so they share something they can all relate to, chicken XP

  • @sander395 This advertisement was aired nationally in Australia as we were against the West Indies in a Cricket tournament at the time, "You weren't supposed to see" because it was only for Australia for the promotion of the meal deal by KFC Aus.

Australians don't have the african-american stereotype of eating chicken so this is not and was not inteded to be racist at all but America loves stepping in to police these things to help with their guilt of the past (without taking in context).

  • why would they hire all black people then... so dumb, add some diversity in this commercial

  • @TheRealAkaRai There was absolutely no controversy attached to this ad until it was viewed over the internet in the US. Some narrow minded smartass viewers took it out of context as racism and made an inquiry into KFC Australia when it was NONE of their business as the Ad was not made for American's but for a culture that does not share the same stereotype or point of view. So yes a few individuals if that makes you happy but that was a very quick comment i made 4 MONTHS ago.

  • @Smithster82 Whoa whoa whoa, how the fuck is this America's fault? You come off a little braindead talking about America "policing" things when we're talking about a few people on the internet angry about a fried chicken commercial. Fuck you're an idiot.

  • It's not that you were not supposed to see the ad... It's because it as no relevance to America. It was promotion a Meal Deal buy KFC Australia who were sponsoring the international cricket series between Australia & the West Indies. The only awkward situation is that the guy is in the other teams stand and decides to make friends by sharing food. American stereotypes do not apply and the ad is not racist. Only people who read racism into this are racist.

  • i love this ad

    WHITE PWA

  • @TruroCityBoy Exactly

  • think of this way would there be as much controversy if the west indie members of this ad were replaced by say people from india or hell white englishmen my answer hell no it would'nt

  • i think the problem is that we look for racism now to the point of nitpicking something like an tv ad when it has people of a certain race involved in it we ask ourserves is this gonna be racist which is a blind way to look at life really.

Let me explain this ad KFC Sponsors the cricket in australia 99.99% of the time, Australia was playing the west indies in a series of matches i think kfc was trying to be current with what we were watching and didn't really see the racial terms of there ad

  • so which countries was this ad banned in?

  • Holy shit!

I didn't know the Oakland Raiders played in Australia too!
