Riz speaks with a leading American economist who argues that the West's efforts to aid the poor have done more harm than good. William Easterly is the author of "White Man's Burden," which studies how the West has spent billions to help poor countries, with little success.

  • Extremely stimulating talk. Doing more doesn't mean necessarily doubling the aid, but taking a different approach.

  • true the "white men" flatter themselves in thinking they help, solve and save Africa and africans , when infact they are the reason for all african misery and poverty.but the younger genrations of africa will save their mama africa. ENOUGH OF THE TORTURE, FAMINE, POVERY.African younger generations will rise.

  • I agree that it should be used with more care... but thats no reason to not increase it... this whole anti "doubling" argument he brings up is just plain retarded. In 1960s half of the world was in poverty, now one sixth, regressive analysis shows that Aid is attributable a good chunk of it, PERIOD. Its making progress and yet these critics arise complaining about pride issues in the form of "if i was african i would be offended". Who the hell cares, just keep funding, keep fixing.

  • fuck giving money.....those africans dont deserve it. fuck em

  • @chapaev36 I am a liberal but I do not agree with Sachs. Generalising much? Sachs speaks of ending poverty in Africa if they chose to - I would like to see that happen in South Side Chicago for starters. Hot air

  • Easterly is my hero. I wish he spoke at my university's convocation and not Jeffrey Sachs. But I can't help that my uni is controlled by liberal fools.

  • Easterly's book "The White Man's Burden" is exceptionally good. He's not a very good public speaker and his book is MUCH better at communicating his arguments. It is deeply data rich and evidence based argumentation. And once you've read that book, I highly suggest you move on to Dambisa Moyo's book "Dead Aid". Dambisa is a former World Bank analyst and Goldman Sachs economist who, as an African, argues that foreign aid has bred corruption and poverty. Also well supported, data rich arguments.

  • the main problem is the african governments themselves, the asian tigers have lifted themselves out of poverty, african countries can do the same with good leaders

  • Interesting you say that. In "The White Man's Burden," Easterly casts doubt on the viability of the free market as a solution to development. :P

  • - The developing countries continues to lives with dignity even without Western assistance.

    - Loan is a form of control by creating debt.

    - Source of loan comes from profit of the poor countries' natural resources.

    - "Investment" usually imply infrastructure (transportation, utilities, telecommunication, etc) development to benefit accelerated exploitation before other countries do. Built, owned, and operated by the investing country.
