From 1942 onward, the U.S. 8th Air Force based in England conducted daylight bombing raids on military and industrial targets in Germany during Operation Pointblank. Formations of unescorted bombers were no match for German fighters, which inflicted a deadly toll upon the aircrews. Casualties were so great that daytime raids were suspended untill the developement of the P-51 provided a fighter with sufficient range to escort the bombers to the targets and back.
