This song could probably best be labeled "Americana". Like most of my songs, I don't know where it came from. I'm not sure how or why I wrote it, it just popped into my head. But I will say this... it took me about 30 takes to record the last verse because for reasons I don't fully understand, I can not sing this song without crying. It's very odd.

You are enjoying this song for free, but it was far from free to make. This album took 4 months and over $20,000 to make. PLEASE, if you enjoy what you hear and if you can, please consider purchasing this album at:

Lyrics:

Well, the days are long and the work is hard
When your childhood is spent in the fields
And summer seemed to last million years
One day when I was just a boy
During one of those hot summer swells
The locusts were silenced by the clanging of bells

And there was the thing for which I longed
A place where I belonged
Where I first held the hand of the one I loved
When the circus came to town

We ate candy-corns and corn dogs
Cotton candy and candy-canes
And we shared a caramel apple by the arcade
And when night fell and the stars rose
And light bedazzled the fair
We rode the Ferris wheel
Up into the air

And there was the thing for which I longed
A place where I belonged
Where I first held the hand of the one I loved
When the circus came to town

And later, in the funhouse,
Our bodies looked so strange
And the mirrors made our faces seemed deranged
And the snake-man in the freak-show
He got you so alarmed
That you ran and ran and ran
Right into my arms
Oh, oh, oh

The next morning I got up
Wrapped my clothes up into a ball
And I ran and ran to run away with the fair
But when I arrived, to my surprise,
All the tents and wagons were gone
And they'd stolen all that happiness from the air

And gone was the thing for which I longed
That place where I belonged
Where I last held the hand of the one I loved
When the circus came
When the circus came
When the circus came to town

  • It's a very lovely song my friend. - I understand how it could get anyone emotional.-lol@you advising people to buy the album; I bought it twice.-The hardcopy takes a while to deliver, so I got the mp3 download because I needed to here it NOW, DAMMIT!!

I've always loved your balance of serious and funny songs, but this album took the cake. - 'Innocent' made me cry, 'Riding a black unicorn' make me dance like a baboon, and 'Cathouse Tragedy'... ..."I shoulda been a dentist" made me bust a gut. :)

  • 1 person is in the circus full of poop NO OFFENCE VOLTAIRE!!! :S

  • OMG I NEARLY CRIED MY EYES OFF :''')

  • I SUBSCRIBD YOU XD BYE!!!.

  • Voltaire is the best artist I have ever heard of in my entire life. I love his songs because a lot of them are extremely funny! But, this album was, hands down THE BEST!

    I LOVE YOU VOLTAIRE!!!!

  • @GilesHellier I listened to the ones I put off, again I don't like them, HOWEVER I find the dirty song, and razor cabaret both funny and very well written. They just aren't what I'd listen to more then three times. However this and Innocent I'd love them even on the thousandth time.

  • @GilesHellier I didn't like most the songs, but I'd buy the CD just for this song and Innocent. They both brought a tear to my eyes. Thanks again for these songs once more Voltaire.

  • @KillerPROduction1 It's human to fail ... Sadly I am not a human so I have no idea how that happened o_O

  • @Baltheo Mucis??????? "Music"

  • This song almost made me cry when I first heard it. It would've succeded in doing so if it wasn't so noisy in the background. Listened to it a second time, then the waterworks came. This song reminds me of my story that I've been working on for a while now, and it's about a circus, too. It's different than the story embedded in this song, but they both share a sense of sadness.

I know you might've heard this about a million times already now, but you're a genuis, Voltaire! Don't stop singing!
