Raspberries are a power pop/pop rock band from Cleveland, Ohio in the United States. They had a run of success in the early 1970s music scene with their crisp pop sound, which Allmusic later described as featuring "exquisitely crafted melodies and achingly gorgeous harmonies." The members were known for their clean-cut public image, with short-hair and matching suits, which brought them teenybopper attention as well as scorn from some mainstream media outlets as 'uncool'. The group drew influence from the British Invasion era—especially The Beatles, The Who, The Hollies, and The Small Faces—and its mod sensibility. In both the U.S. and the UK, the Raspberries helped pioneer the power pop music style that took off after the group disbanded. They also have a following among professional musicians such as Jack Bruce and Ringo Starr.

The group's original lineup consisted of Eric Carmen (vocalist/guitarist/bassist), Wally Bryson (guitarist), Jim Bonfanti (drummer), and Dave Smalley (guitarist/bassist). Their best known songs include "Go All The Way", "Let's Pretend", "I Wanna Be With You", "Tonight", and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)". Producer Jimmy Ienner was responsible for all the Raspberries' albums in the 1970s, which often attempted to replicate Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" production techniques dubious -- discuss] The group broke up in 1975 after a five year run, and Eric Carmen proceeded to a successful career as a solo artist. Bryson and Smalley resurrected the group's name in 2000 and continue to tour, taking in indie pop singer/songwriter Scott McCarl working as the vocalist. In 2005, Eric Carmen rejoined the band, and then the original four-man lineup undertook a well-received reunion tour.

  • @fabulbabe Wall of Sound is right. When I saw them at Boise State in the 70's they had stacks of Ampeg amps from wall to wall. Very few concerts I went to were as loud as the raspberries :)

  • i agree withthe uploaders comments that this group was more influential than it got credit for being. Power pop was a big thing in the mid 70s.

  • another tearjerker...damn, im surprised i still have tears left..x0...damn....damn..damn....kk

  • I love how Eric Carmen wrote a one-line verse and cuts straight to the chorus -- way to go, Eric! Forget the verse and cut right to the good stuff! It always makes me laugh when I hear it.

  • 50's undertones. Gritty vocals , falsetto. bridges , refrains totally amazing for their time!

  • @1thepner there is alwayz hope my dear.

  • This is cool rock. I dare james l neibaur to tell me it's a precursor to punk again - lol

  • Nobody today compares to them. No regrets for me, they were part of my generation. Thank God I didn't miss out on them. My nephews and nieces? Too stupid to figure it out and don't know the good stuff...although one niece does like Pink Floyd. Maybe there's hope.....

  • they sure don't make music like this anymore. All music today is so unoriginal and it all sounds alike.

  • The Raspberries deserve to be as celebrated as other renowed power pop bands like Big Star!
