Today PETA would argue that it's the child's fault for entering the shark's natural habitat and of course that man is evil for bothering the shark because after all it's the shark's home and not man's! Back in those days we just enjoyed the movie for what it was and rooted for the human characters in the movie and not the shark!

Agreed, Jaws is easily Spielberg's best film... Hollywood has tamed him since. Granted he has made some damn good films since... but none touch the character's, community, an music quite like Jaws did...
The death of Alex Kintner really got to people an still does to this day, An anyone that has seen this film an an swim's in the ocean will remember that creeping theme of the approaching shark.
Jaws was an will always be a land-mark in film making.

It's just a movie people meaning it's all fake. Those that are a fan of the Jaws films would know the movie and novel were based on the shark attacks in 1916, and one of the victims was indeed a child similar in age to Alex in the movie. Those that don't know google it and figure it yourselves before hating on the film you know little about. As far as the gore, Jaws has nothing compared to the movies such as Saw. You gore haters need to complain about those films not just Jaws

Spielberg really broke the rules with Jaws. Up to that point (and still to this day one can argue) kids never got brutally killed. It's some unwritten rule in movie making.
The tragic death of Alex Kintner really shocked the audience. Heck, it shocked me when I saw Jaws on tv in the 90's.
