Just back from London and I've edited a bit of phone footage to our Golden charms track.
The Matthew & Me Track Golden charms was inspired by Matthews experiences of the infamous Colony Room Club in Soho. Golden charms isn't on our soundcloud page so here's an album taster track too.
Ian Board, Matthew's great uncle ran the club with first Muriel Belcher and then Michael Wojas.
The Colony Rooms has sadly now closed, but in its glory days, the Club and its bohemian members were renowned for the atmosphere they created.
The members crude and offensive behaviour, mammoth drinking binges, and foul mouths gave the club a reputation as a den of iniquity, but the undeniable genius of the artists who appeared at the club made it a hot house for the most ground breaking of contemporary artist to escape mainstream society.
The one room dive acted to reproach the try-hard trendy overpriced money driven mainstream bars that began to ingest the fabled square mile of vice.
In 1948, Muriel Belcher opened the club as intended meeting place for writers, artists and hard drinkers. Painters in particular were drawn to the club, Francis Bacon as a young man was paid to bring in interesting types. Bacon described the club as '"A place to go where one feels free and easy."
Ian Board then became the protege of Muriel, and the club then grew and remained as an institution.
The eccentric and dazzling members were bonded by boozing wit and and obsession with the arts, who thrived in the seedy and rebellious atmosphere.
When we visited the site of the club on New years day a message, written in lipstick on the door read...
'x-mas kisses for our lovely'.
Long may the memories of the Colony Rooms be shared.
Love 'Ida' Cnty. XxXx
