This song is about an American Soldier who survives the Vietnam War, only to lose his son in the Iraq War.
Lyrics:
He won medals for his courage in a war that made no sense,
Killed Viet Cong in a country that now we treat as friends,
Came home with perfect body, but with scars upon his mind,
Recalling fallen comrades that he had to leave behind.

Chorus:
So he put is life together, met his wife and settled down,
Got a job and raised a family back again in his home town,
But the nightmares they returned again when his only son came back
In a body bag with Stars and Stripes from the City of Baghdad.

Over fifty thousand soldiers gave their lives in Vietnam.
And fate alone decided that he was not one of them
He grieved for them but fought because he heard that if we won,
The world would be a safer place for his beloved son.

(Repeat chorus)
A thousand more Americans have died on foreign land,
And a thousand more will perish as the flames of war are fanned,
His only son is lost to him and now he wonders if,
Once fifty thousand more have died, will he be safe again.

(Repeat Chorus)

  • Listen and digest the words

If the leaders of the nations of the world wish to kill, they should be the ones that pick up the weapons and kill and maim each other. When will they stop using their citizens for political fodder? Probably never :(

I speak as a citizen of the USA, VietNam veteran, widow of a Vietnam veteran and mother of a current soldier on his way back to Hell!

  • Your profile says you are 34 years old - it would have been tough for you to be a Vietnam Vet - is this an untruthful post?

  • The post is not false; the age is.

After viewing the video, I was compelled to post what I did and was not trying to mislead anyone. The stats about me are irrelevant

  • OK - thanks!

  • You wrote this yourself? Wonderful song, beautiful soulful voice..... 5* and well done.

  • Thanks for your nice comments! Glad you enjoyed it!

  • Tommy;

You are too young to witness the VN war, the war was a US attempt to replace French colonialism, take it from me, I am French born in VN & know my history.

PS: by the way, how can the US wins in Iraq now Iraq has a SHIITE govt like the Islamic Republic of Iran? all you replaced Saddam Hussein for the pro-Iranian Ayatollahs in Iraq.

  • That's such a sad song. I dare not to listen the 2nd times. I don't want to cry (again). Thank you for posting. Hope US troops will soon be pulled out of Iraq, and war will end.

  • I'm doing research on whether Vietnam veterans see similarities between the Vietnam War and Iraq War. Could I ask you a few questions?

  • Not to mention that after nearly a trillion dollars spent, Bin Laden is still enjoying life, idiots are still trying to blow up planes, the only winners are plutocrats.

  • EXACTLY!

If they want to lead us into war then they should do exactly that or pipe down and get back to their job.

  • very profound, so sorry for your tragic loss. hope everyone is home soon!

  • Mademoiselle;

Je suis d'accord avec vous(I agree with you).
