Appraisals are predominantly used to give feedback to both parties and can be highly beneficial for both the employer and employee is terms of their development and morale within the work place. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of appraisals...

Listen:Let the appraisee do 70% of the talking -- this allows you to form a more detailed insight into their progress as well as highlight any issues.

Reflective questions: Ask probing and reflective questions such as "what has gone particularly well?", "What have you learned from that experience?" and "What would you do differently if the situation arose again?"

Establish roles: If interviewing in a panel format, make sure that roles are clearly distinguished in order to project a co-ordinated approach.

Be prepared: Be prepared to tackle difficult topics; don't turn and the discussion into a battle of words, remain calm and objective.

Summarise: This reinforces the topics discussed, clarifies to the appraisee that you have understood what has been said and refocuses the conversation.

Set goals: Discuss goals and targets for the appraisee, this helps to motivate staff.
