"Double Dutch Bus" is a 1981 funk song by Frankie Smith, made famous for its extensive use of the 'izz' infix form of slang. The song title represents a combination of two institutions in Smith's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, neighborhood: the double dutch game of jump rope played by neighborhood kids, and the SEPTA bus system that was a backbone of the local transportation network (and for which Smith had unsuccessfully applied for a bus driving position; the Transpass referred to in the song is an actual SEPTA pass). Smith and co-writer Bill Bloom persuaded contacts at WMOT Records to finance the song, and it was recorded in the summer of 1981, engineered by Gene Leone. The song rocketed to popularity in a matter of weeks. On the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, it held the number one spot for eight weeks. It also crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number 30 in the summer of 1981. The record has received two separate gold certifications, one for sales of the 7" edit, and a second gold record for sales of the 12" single. Frankie Smith (Franklyn Leon Smith) is a funk musician and R&B/soul songwriter. A native of Philadelphia, he went to college in Tennessee for elementary education with a minor in music. He became a writer for funk and soul artists such as The O'Jays and The Spinners. He has also been influential in the careers of the rappers Tone Lōc, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg. With "Double Dutch Bus", Smith popularized a nonsensical form of slang, in which 'iz' is placed in the middle of a word ('place' becomes 'plizace') or the last letters of a word are replaced with '-izzle' ('sure' becomes 'shizzle'). The style became part of hip-hop slang, and was popularized by rappers Snoop Dogg (who is often mis-credited for Smith's originality) and E-40. "Double Dutch Bus" itself has been sampled frequently in hip-hop, including Snoop Dogg's "Snoop Dogg (What's My Name, Pt. 2)" and Missy Elliott's "Gossip Folks", both produced by Timbaland. Frankie Smith is currently working as a delivery driver for AC Reproductions in Philadelphia, PA.
