I want a big butter and egg man- Bobby Hackett 1955

Bobbby Hacket and his band started recording in some Hollywood studio. The eight jazzmen set up and the engineer checked the microphone placement until all parties were satisfied with acoustics of the first tests.
When the first take came back over the studio loudspeakers, it was hard to believe, hearing such relaxed and confident jazz, particularily since this group had never played together until a few days before.
Now, some 58 years later I cannot recall having heard such relaxed and beautiful jazz being played anywhere yet. These musicians were the champions then and as far as I'm concerned nobody has reached that level yet..
Of course cornetist Bobby Hackett as well as trombonist Jack Teagarden were both at their very best and as a result of this session several more recordings were made by the two with different back-up musiccians. This California back-up team was so good that this recording still stands out and is available on CD.
The other musicians were Abe Lincoln trombone, Matty Matlock clarinet, Nappy Lamare banjo, Don Owens piano, Phil Stephens tuba and Nick Fatool drums.
The original LP has been in my collection since the mid fifties, shortly after being released and you guessed it: still one of my favourrites.

  • How many times have any of you band members, leaders, used string bass over tuba? I have many times but only because I couldn't find a tuba player like Phil Stevens..Isn't he marvelous!!!! I was lucky enough in my later years playing in Cenral Florida to find many good tuba players and always chose them over string!

  • in connection with your last message. The big butter and egg man is still there, you had me worried for a while

  • Oh, this is indeed choice! Thank you so much erwigaudio. A genuine treat!

  • Nick Fatool has to be one of the most underated dixie drummers. That four bar break at the end is so imaginative. He played with Goodman and Shaw and could just fit in anywhere.

  • My mother, Celia, who was a fine violinist and piano player, would have fit right in with the beat of this music; her year book is in the

Train Museum in Coopersville, Michigan--1922--her brothers Abraham--1924--Issac--1930. Whenever I came into the house, she would sit right down at the piano, and start playing; I then would get out my clarinet and join her; my father would then sit down at the drums; it was a beautiful way to live.

  • Hello.

  • The stars were aligned for this particular record date. The whole album is the best.

  • jonnybogue - Thanks for the post re Barbara Dreiwicz. We did a gig together in CT. I have a photo from the that concert taken by a local newspaper photographer on my wall of that band.

  • @mrsticks28 I believe you are referring to Barbara Dreiwicz. She plays tuba, and her husband Dick plays trombone.

  • Lots of good post on this particular Hackett recording.!!!! I would have to say this band, these musicians, this song, certainly epitomizes what a very good dixieland jazz band is all about ! Time, phrasing, beautifully created solos, superb backing ,piano, drums, banjo and especially tuba......AWESOME..!

  • The sweetest cornet-EVER!Purity and execution are superb!

  • Very Nice! I first heard this about 50yrs ago,but not so often recently...it still sounds great ! THANKS Pete uk

  • Speaking of tuba players, two guys that I've worked with are Bill Crow and Greg McCurty. Both excellent players and a woman named Barbara from New Jersey is also right up there.
