Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery is the largest local authority museum service in England. There are over 500,000 objects in the collections, dating from 200,000 years ago to the present, and originating from each of the continents. BMAG is home to one of the world's finest collections of Pre-Raphaelite art, as well as extensive collections of fine and applied art, social history, archaeology and ethnography. Innovative new galleries telling the global story of a city and its people, from prehistory to the present day.
Not one history but many
This exciting and ambitious project is part of BMAGs 20 year plan a vision for a world class museums service at the cultural heart of Birmingham.
It will transform the top floor of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery to create five new galleries telling the story of the city of Birmingham and its people. Drawing on the museums internationally significant Birmingham History collections the displays will encompass trade and industry, civic history and architecture, local topography, manufacture and design. The long history of Birminghams diverse communities will be vividly explored through themes of migration, work and social life.
