On Saturday 17th April, Vintage Trains Ltd and First Great Western co-operated to run the first non-stop steam train between London and Bristol for almost 50 years, to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Great Western Region in 2010.

The train was hauled by preserved GWR Castle Class loco 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe". On the return journey from Bristol, it did the journey of 118 miles in 109 minutes, with sustained running at its 75mph allowed maximum. It arrived at Paddington 45 minutes early, greatly pleasing everyone except the people who turned out at the lineside and missed it!

This video shows the early afternoon down train, the late afternoon up train (just caught it!) and the excursion trains that ran on the Friday to bring the loco and the stock down from Tyseley to London, and on the Sunday to return them home.

Shot with my iPhone. One day I will get a proper video camera!

  • With that Disco Music how about painting some Graffiti on the loco and cars?

  • 45 minutes early at 75 eh? imagine how early she'd be if she had gotten up to 100?

  • I like that the GW mainline is not electrified yet, at least in part. Railways look better without the overhead gantries.

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • Excellent footage mate, thumbs up and fav'd

  • Nice one.
