The story of Jules Brunet, who inspired the character of Nathan Algren, played by Tom Cruise in the 2003 movie "the Last Samurai".

The French officer Jules Brunet played an active role during the Boshin War, leading the rebellion against the Imperial Nippon, in 1868-69.

"A revolution is forcing the Military Mission to return to France. Alone I stay, alone I wish to continue, under new conditions, the results obtained by the Mission, together with the Party of the North, which is the party favorable to France in Japan. Soon a reaction will take place, and the Daimyos of the North have offered me to be its soul".
— Jules Brunet, Letter to Napoleon III

Music : "A man's destiny" and " and "Journey to the village" from the "Last Samurai" OST by Hans Zimmer.

The Satsuma Rebellion (西南戦争, Seinan Sensō (Southwestern War), was a revolt of Satsuma ex-samurai against the Meiji government starting on January 29, 1877 , 9 years into the Meiji Era. It was the last, and the most serious, of a series of armed uprisings against the new government. The Rebellion led by Saigo Takamori -ex pro-Meiji officer- was finally crushed on September 24, 1877 in Kyushu.

  • AMAZING, the real story behind the Movie is even better than the film itself.

  • @davetileguy

French invasion of Vietnam, a "pathetic route"? As far as i can tell, the French defeated the Chinese & invaded Indochina (Vietnam+Laos+Cambodia). They settled there during 80 years. USA (with mass bombing, napalm, chemicals, unlimited credits etc...) didn't stay more than 15 years. This is what i call "pathetic"...Never saw an Anglo-Saxon with a real historical culture. What a pity.

  • @MarcoisX the anglo-saxons kinda disappeared after the norman conquest of 1066, when the modern english people (brits) were "born"

  • @Wolfen443 My friend, The Last Samurai never took place during the Boshin War. It took place during the Setsuma Rebellion, 8 years after the Boshin.

  • @JINATAHISAKAZU i think Katsumoto was based on Saigō Takamori, cause he was basically considered the last samurai, and also did some equal actions, if you forget that Saigo used firearms and death etc :P

  • @indexelbow BTW Americans aren't mostly Anglo Saxons. the Brits are.

  • @giu76034347 i understand what you mean , its a bit true but not at all, french and japon military culture have some similitude , and that become a passion , bushido

  • @Sweetlittlemystery

I'm going to read about it now, because a) I love the movie and b) I'm also going to Japan this year (July) :D :D

  • So, this was one more french imperialists moron who fought in Mexico and after taught Japanese to fought against us, Korean.
