CHLOE - Fox Trot
(Song of the Swamp)
(Gus Kahn-Neil Moret)
Vocalion (Brunswick), 3262 (19452), 1936.

The standard, "Chloe," was written in 1927 and recorded over the years by many well-known recording artists, including the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in 1928 and Louis Armstrong in 1953. I especially like this interpretation by the Henry Allen Orchestra. On the reverse side of the record is "You're Not the Kind," presented earlier here.

"Through the black of night,
I've got to go where you are.
If it's wrong or right,
I've got to go where you are!

"I'll roam through the dismal swamp land
Searching for you;
'Cause if you are lost there,
Let me be there, too!

"Through the smoke and flames,
I've got to go where you are;
For no place could be too far,
Where you are!

"Ain't no chains can bind you;
If you live, I'll find you.
Love is calling me;
I've got to go where you are!"

The swamp land pictorial interlude includes illustrations from vintage magazines in the collection of abendstunde49.

  • Thanks for the great song! Do you happen to know if this song was in a movie or a stage production? I know many artists have recorded it, but I can't find anything regarding where it may have appeared. I know Gus Kahn wrote for MGM for many years. Many thanks!

  • @apricotsoap

    I am glad you liked it!

    I don't believe it was used as a musical number in a movie, but I could be wrong!

  • This song has been going thru my head for months. Maybe the Spike Jones version? It starts boom da diddy boom CHLO EEEE boom da diddy boom CHLO EEEE. Someone calling, no reply ... etc. etc.

  • @sillamoon I think you are right that it is the Spike Jones version. It can be found on Youtube; I have heard it!

  • Thanks Stanley. Very catchy tune is't it? Also enjoyed your Zenith Stompers video. Did you ever play yourself with Humphrey? I looked at this video also. I understand you were approached by my daughter?!!! Thank you for your good wishes. Anne

  • A nice version of this wonderful song! And creative presentation as always.

  • @apricotsoap Good question. First off, there's a wonderful, but rare sheet showing that Ethel Waters used Chlo-e in "Africana," a musical. According to IMDb, Chlo-e was used in the following films:

    Tom & Jerry cartoon: His Mouse Friday (1951); Bring on the Girls (1945 Paramount film); Mr. & Mrs. Jesse Crawford (1938 short by Warner Bros). My notes also list Chlo-e in some film called "Mirrors" (1934).

    Moret's niece Nan Bostick
