20-27 September 2008 - This past week has been one of the most difficult weeks of my life. Upon receiving the news that my father had a massive stroke, I immediately drove up to Polokwane (Pietersburg), South Africa to be by his bed side. Upon arrival I was informed that he had experienced a black out in the toilet on Saturday 20th, hit his head against the wall and suffered an intracerebral hematoma. The x-rays revealed that there was bleeding over the entire right section of his brain. The doctors informed me that a person half my father's age stood little chance of surviving surgery - my Dad was 82 years old and in a deep coma. I remained by his bedside constantly and on Wednesday 24th at 18:45, he took his last breath. I was alone with him in the ward when this took place. I was so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to tell him how much I loved him and assure him that I would take care of everything. I also told him that my late mother was waiting for him and that he must go to her. He took my advice. Although this was an extremely sad time for me, it was also one of the most precious moments of my life. I was able to witness the last breath of this amazing, extraordinary man, who was my icon, who was there when I took my first breath and who raised me as a tiny baby because my mother was too ill to be discharged from hospital for many months. He is now peaceful in the arms of the Lord and reunited with my mother who was the love of his life. It is also quite a coincidence that my grandfather passed away on the exact same day 33 years ago!

My brother, Les, my sister, Stella and myself will meet at Robberg in Plettenberg Bay (his place of birth) and scatter his ashes on the 24 September 2009 and thereafter celebrate his life.

  • Dear Denis, I knew you and your dad, whom I called Uncle Danny, when I lived in P'burg and worked at Brenners. I loved him and respected him and I have thought about him and missed him for the last 25 years but each and every memory I have of him has made me smile, what a wonderful special man. Michele
