Really great combination of guitars and vocals--really amazing.

Thing is, this band do wistful like no other. And this being one of their definitively melancholic and reflective offerings, I think Gary's detached, quizzical mien is of a piece with the material.

Yeah... WOAH ! Jeez...! What was I thinking, right? I shall keep my head down and adore, blindly in future!..and refrain from having a point of view.
I love this band, by the way, in case I didn't make that evident enough for folks who aren't into subtlties and stuff.

Maybe you were expecting David Lee Roth in a unitard with a sausage stuffed down his pants. Is that what it takes to MEAN it?
Give me a break. It's a great song. I wish I could have seen it live.

While I got the chills watching this ... I can totally agree with your overall point. If the passion isn't clearly evident on stage, you are like instantly removed from the power of the songs. More like going through the motions. thoughtful comment, my friend, and great taste in bands.

I fell in love with Rainy day music and, you know, wore the shit out of the tape, etc.. but after watching numerous footage of them, live I can't help feeling the same thing I felt when I went to see Wilco.. They're obviously technically great and the songs are beautifully written.. but Where's the excitement, passion, happiness, involvement.. in the playing of it... Its like "C'mon guys.. I don't quite BELIEVE you today".. play that shit like you MEAN it.
