This reagent is used for testing chlorine concentration in swimming pools. It is commonly known as o-tolidine, orthotolidine, or, 2-tolidine. For pools and tapwater, it will turn various shades of green. Increasing the chlorine concentration by adding sodium hypochlorite (bleach) will cause it to turn orange. Excess chlorine will oxidize the dye.
