@AthSilent. No, they did not eat cats, and they didn't use the guts of cats for strings either. The origin of the word Catgut is unknown, but most likely means the gut of cattle. For the making of strings, it was mainly the gut of sheep or lambs that people used in the past.

@AthSilent You did hear that right! Strings use to be made of cat gut, although now they mainly use sheep and cow gut (stomach and intestine...). I think this is because we eat sheep and cow, not cats. So there is a supply readily available.
