Afleet Again, the longest shot in the field of 11, made an outside run the final time around the far turn and sustained it through the stretch to post a 41-1 stunner in the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

The Marathon was marred by an injury to 3-1 favorite A. U. Miner, who raced far back early and went wrong the final time around the far turn. A. U. Miner was vanned off the track with an original diagnosis of bilateral sesamoid fractures in the left front. He was being assessed on the backstretch.

Meeznah also failed to finish. She was eased due to fatigue, although her overall condition was listed by officials as good.

  • @MBernier08 - So just 3 turf races??....um the International connections come here to run their charges on turf. Other wise just call it the USA Breeders Cup.

  • @MBernier08 that would be such a great idea, and all the races would have better horses, and not 2-3 good by race and 10 no-name we never heard of before who could enter just because there's more spot than good horses-_-;

  • @Alecramsay1227 Couldn't agree more. The product is getting watered down more and more every year. Eliminate Breeders' Cup Friday all together and regroup the races for Saturday. Sprint, Juvenile Fillies, Juvenile, F&M Turf, Turf, Dirt Mile, Mile, Distaff and Classic. Do away with the Juvy Sprint, F&M Sprint, both Juvy Turfs, Turf Sprint (although I love 5 F sprints), and the Marathon. Run the 9 BC races with a few nice races on the undercard and the quality would improve greatly.

  • @MBernier08 I agree with you. I also think overall there's too many races in the BC, they're just adding races for the sake of adding races. BC day use to be the day where champions could meet and fight head to head, the day to decide the champions. Watch out, in 2-3 years they'll soon have 20 races to all dodge themself. Like with the Juvenile sprint, what do you do if you have 2 top 2YO and the two of them win impressively the 2 Juveniles races, what do you do for the Eclipse award???

  • I don't mean to sound critical, but this may be the most useless race in all of North America, and the fact that it is a graded stakes speaks volumes to the current racing landscape. Honestly, how many races are held on dirt at more than 12 furlongs each year? Maybe 10? Even that may be generous. Personally, I think this race should be eliminated from the Breeders' Cup immediately. Nothing more than a novelty race, in my opinion.
