I'M JUST A VAGABOND LOVER
Words and music by Rudy Vallee and Leon Zimmerman
Performed by Ben Selvin and His Orchestra
Vocal refrain by Ben Gordon
Recorded May 3, 1929
Columbia 1831-D

Ben Selvin (1898 - 1980) was the recording director at Columbia records. Still in his thirties, Selvin already had nearly two decades in the music business as a violinist, an orchestra leader, a songwriter, a music contractor, a radio conductor and a recording artist. His 1918 rendition of "Dardenella" is said to be the first record to sell more than a million copies. As recording director for Columbia, Selvin organized sessions for popular singers like Ruth Etting, Ethel Waters and Kate Smith and produced dates by studio groups that were sometimes released under his own name, sometimes under pseudonyms as The Columbia Photo Players and The Midnight Minstrels. He was also supervised many of Benny Goodman's early recording sessions, featuring Tommy Dorsey, Manny Kline, Adrian Rollini, Rube Bloom and Eddie Lang.

  • Beautiful. I just love the old sound. Cannot get enough of it.

Not quite the romantic sound of the Rudy Vallee version but still marvelous.

  • @bsgs98 you're right of course, age wise. But these old standards would be familiar to them I would think, and certainly the recordings of Miller, Lombardo Artie Shaw, the Dorseys and all the others would be pleasant for them- better than listening to commercial radio or a flickering T.V. , or some poor soul talking to themselves or crying. Believe me, I've spent time in them. The staff are hard working, and kind, and it must be a difficult job at the best of times. This music would help.

  • Hard to believe this was recorded over 80 years ago. A classic 20's disc, and a lot of memories for many people.

I think if they played this kind of music-and all the others you have- in nursing homes across the land, we'd have a lot of happier seniors.

makes me happy just listening, and I'm not there yet!

Thanks- nice video and a fine old dance band- when people did that sort of thing.

    -Bill

  • Beautiful rendition!

  • From the movie of the same name. Rudy's first talkie...........I think the admission price was $l.00 a head when it open in New York. Loretta Young's sister Sally Blain(sp) was the girl...........Not a bad film for it's day...
