Match Game 77 - Dawson Meltdown

Richard Dawson can be a self-righteous panelist at times and here it is clearly displayed. He would go on to run Family Feud and be that show's ultimate judge, unlike here in Match Game where Ira Skutch could overrule him. Gene does a great job trying to hold the show together.

richard started on family feud in 1976::: i wonder if this clip was right after richard asked to be released from his match game contract and the producers and etc. of the show refused to let him out of the contract --- 77 and 78 -- richard seemed less richard after that incident --- but later 78 , richard bounced back because he won the emmy for family feud and richard's last episode was 1285 in 1978

That is my thinking too. You could notice how he believed he carried the show (esp the Super Match - almost everyone picks Richard) and struggled sometimes to take control away from Gene (like in this clip).

This show was great and Gene was an EXCELLENT host. Too bad their aren't any hosts (and game shows) like this anymore. Their COULD be if the idiots in Hollywood would just wake up and realize what the public would like to see.

I wouldn't say he's being 'self righteous' in this clip. He's just embarrassed by writing down a different response then what he meant. I'm sure he's telling the truth since like he said 'sat/sit is in the question' but obviously the judges cant violate their own rules by taking his word.

it looked to me that richard plainly made a mistake with his answere and became embarassed.. he realized his answer was the very question that was asked. haven't you ever said something and then realized it was really foolish and then tried everything in the book to justify what you said even though you knew yourself it was really foolish. i mean people will even get angry. you will do and say exactly the things richard said here.i'v had stuff like this happen to me already and done the same

No... Richard just hadn't had any sleep the night before this taping, because he was doing a telethon. So, he was a little out of it. The producers of Match Game (Goodson & Todman) also produced the Family Feud.

From what I heard, he started drinking heavily after the show was cancelled and attempts to revive it crashed.
