Dawson wasn't being "self-righteous". He was just ticked off at himself for doing such a dumb-ass thing, and felt a bit guilty about depriving the contestant of a point. In any case, he never went beyond the bounds of acceptable Match Game behavior. He was part of the Match Game "family" and he knew how far he could push the envelope.

I guess just the fact he said the "F" word made it real. He definately lost his temper for a split second.
And just FYI...Richard Dawson and Charles Nelson Reilly were both understudies of Gene Rayburn back in the 60's when Gene Rayburn was still doing radio.

Dawson was the biggest horses ass. At the time, he and Rayburn were considered the stars of the show but Dawson's playboy persona has not aged well, and I think Brett's and Charles' immense contributions have come to be more appreciated over time

I watched this show and family feud when I was younger and I never found Richard to be self-righteous at all. I don't think he lost his cool or his temper here. He was more mad at himself than he was at the judges. I have always found the man to be a complete gentleman and personally I find calling him self-righteous and having a 'melt-down' completely wrong and I think you owe him an apology.

I dont have a link now but ive witnessed more than once him kissing young girls who were around 12 to 14 years old. In no world or time is that right and especially on the lips. People seem to have a blind spot where he was concerned and it disgusts me. Im going to try and get a lonk for you to see him in action. I know most here will say 'oh he is a lovely man he is just being friendly'.....ugh.

@bluestriker4444 perhaps i am - can you supply a link to such content so that i can judge for myself - those are rather strong accusations that you made against dawson - i've never read anything prior to this that suggests he's a pedophile

@jkat2000 Its not right for a man in his 40s to kiss 12 year old girls who he doesnt even know on the lips. If you think thats ok then you are the a@#hole here.

@Billtheawesome Just the other day during the matching round a young lady needed the last 2 celebs to match to tie the other contestant and he gave a goofy unmatchable answer so sometimes hs did do when it mattered. There are so many things about the guy I didnt like I could go on forever.

@bluestriker4444 Ya, during the regular matching round. But during the head-to-head round, where it actually mattered and money was on the line, I've never seen him be anything but serious
I was way to young at that time this show was on, however in re-runs on the game show network I just love richard in this show, he is so sexy, it's odd how they used to smoke on this show. When he left the show I stopped recording them because with out him the show wasent the same and I only watched it for richard. I think he brett and charles nelson riley were the game show, I love the banter between those three, and the way they handled the gay issue loved it

@trashyourplace Same here. I was just a tike when it originally aired, I actually thought it was bad because it wasn't "fair" - questions could be easy (having one great response) or hard & tricky, evoking a variety of response. Once Richard started doing Family Feud and they redesigned the set, calling it simply The Match Game, the magic never quite came back.
