I Know I Don't Believe

Based on what I know, I believe there is no god.

Atheism is not a religion or a set of beliefs. It's simply the state of being without a god or gods. There's no "unholy" book, there are no rituals, there are no prayers, there's no pageantry, no donations in hopes of any kind of eternal reward, no requirements, there's no threat of eternal punishment for doing bad things. And, most importantly, there is no god

Yes, many theists think we are opposed to every thing related to religion. Speaking for myself, I'm only opposed to the bad parts. I can take stories from the Bible or other holy books as parables, metaphor, or allegory, but not literally.

I can appreciate religious art on that basis. I just last night attended a wonderful performance of the St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach. What I got out of the text was the spirit of sacrifice which we're all capable of. The music was genius!

i can't even stand bible stories on any level... adam and eve: god messed up; cain and abel: god was a jerk to cain and for no reason...

I remember that too. If it wasn't "godly," then it was "of the devil." Silly, silly beliefs that have somehow lasted. It almost makes me ashamed to be a human... almost. :)

i think she meant that you could like a "religious" song because of the feeling that particular melody gives you but still not have a belief in or reverence for a god (and/or vice versa)

I enjoy other tunes on the bagpipes, but not that one. Besides not liking the tune to start with, it's become so cliched to play it on the bagpipes. Sorry, to each their own.

I still get goosebumps when I hear Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes. :-)
