Did Beyonce even ask Etta James for permission to do the song?
Etta OWNED this song. It's a matter of respect. Give to get.

@jkmycko1 Tell that to Paul Mooney.

I think she is just jellous, bkz she's affraid that Beyonce is replacing her ...

i agree. i think its very rude for etta do hate on beyonce for doing that. like seriously? fuck off. who do you think you are? this kind of makes me lose respect for her. and to think that aretha got mad at her for calling tina the queen. again i said, who do you think you are? these people are so sensitive. theres no one official queen. so stfu. beyonce is basically honoring you so really, shut up.

@Xenobia10 I love and respect Ms Etta James more than any other singer. All I am saying that her dissing Beyonce that way was really uncalled for. I am not even a big fan of Beyonce but Im sure Beyonce had no intention to upset Etta. And also, why is Beyonce criticized for singing this song when that fake self-proclaimed "soul" singer Aguilera has been singing it at least 20 times wherever she wants???

@Uniquesoul2011 I like your comment! yea th choice for Beyonce was a 'political powerplay' secure his place with young affluential blacks & pull the hiphop community's attention/vote.not a BAD move but u r right,at least include Etta as well bc she reps those who fought4freedom tht paved his road2the vote

@michelleissocool sometimes family can b yor worst enemy.I believe she (Etta) was still singing.I wonder if the Prez at least inquired whether she was able to perform the song

@bettylrt U r obviously not a musician.some things r sacred.a singer's 'swansong' is like their birthright, calling card.u cant love n respect Ms.James enuf if u dont see the BLATANT DISS towards her here

@TokyoAtom7 Such betrayal on her son's part!!! I guess 10,000's of we musicians have demetia too right?! she must be turning in her grave to hear him utter such BS
Although I love, love, love Etta James' version of the song, she doesn't have the right to be pissed off at Beyonce. 1) Although Etta made the song famous (again) it was originally written in 1941 by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren. The first big hit version was performed by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. 2) Beyonce did a great job of playing her in the movie 3) Beyonce is not trying to claim that she owns the song at all 4) Beyonce had done some wonderful tributes to Etta previously.
