There is a very unfortunate example that is happening right now.
Tasmanian devils are under an extreme risk of extinction due to a cancer that is spread by biting each others face.

viruses were probably a stronger factor of mutation throughout the history of life than cosmic rays

That's a misnomer of a phrase. The "random mutations" that have survival value are selected for... "naturally". Hence, "natural selection"...
