Alguns momentos da expedição organizada pela Câmara Municipal de Mértola em conjunto com a Mérturis e o clube Os Marafados do TT Algarve.
"Rotas do Al-Andaluz" é uma expedição que levou 35 participantes e 14 viaturas todo-terreno ao reino de Marrocos, tendo início em Mértola e término em Marraquexe.
A expedição percorreu durante 8 dias cerca de 4.000 kms, passando pelo interior e sul marroquinos, e cidades como Chefchaouen, Fez ou Marraquexe, não descurando o espírito da aventura no deserto e a cultura Berber.
Indo ao encontro de parte do património histórico-cultural da própria cidade de Mértola, a expedição "Rotas do Al-Andaluz 2009" cumpriu com os seus objectivos iniciais, revelando ser um sucesso.

A few segments of the "Rotas do Al-Andaluz 2009" Mértola-Marrakech off-road Expedition (03-11 April), organized by the Municipality of Mértola, Mérturis and the Marafados do TT Algarve off-road club, Portugal.
35 participants and 14 vehicles went for over 4.000 kms during 8 adventurous days that took them from Mértola to Marrakech, passing through other cities and landscapes such us Chefchaouen or Fez, and the south desert Berber culture.
Establishing interesting cultural bridges, the expedition proved to be a success, revealing the rich historical background between Mértola and Morocco culture.

Al-Andalus (Arabic: الأندلس) was the Arabic name given to the parts of the Iberian Peninsula governed by Arab and African Muslims, at various times in the period between 711 and 1492.
Mértola (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈmɛɾtulɐ]) is a municipality in southeastern Portugal next to the Spanish border.
The village of Mértola is located on a hill by the Guadiana river, and its strategic location made it an important fluvial commercial port from Classical Antiquity through the period of Islamic domination. Among the vestiges of its past, Mértola boasts the only medieval mosque to have survived in Portugal.
Around the year 711, Hispania was invaded by the Moors from the Maghreb, inaugurating a period of great influence of Islamic culture in the Alentejo region that would last nearly 500 years. Mértola - then called Martulah - and its port played an important economic role in the commerce of agricultural and mineral goods between the Alentejo and other parts of Al-Andalus (Arab Hispania) and Northern Africa.
