This is the first in a brief new art series. Most of them will deal with individual hard-case frontier men (Jesse James, Billy the Kid, John Wesley Hardin, for example). But the OK Corral gun-battle (perhaps the best known shootout in the history of America's frontier West) is the showcase for two such men - Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. At approximately 3 p.m. on an October afternoon in 1881, Earp and Holiiday, along with Earp's brothers Virgil and Morgan, walked down to the OK Corral to face a group of cowboys (usually called the Clanton gang) with whom they had been having difficulties, including drunken threats from a couple of the cowboys. Once the shooting commenced, there were some 30 shots fired over the next half minute. Three men (Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury, Tom McLaury) ended up dead, and Virgil Earp was hit in the leg. The Earps were generally considered heroes, though they were eventually charged with murder (the charge was dropped on the grounds of insufficient evidence). The story, however, was not yet over. Virgil was shot at night a few weeks later by an unknown assailant (he lost the use of his left arm), and Morgan was shot in the back and died three months later in a dark alley. Earp, Holliday and some friends went out looking for the men they believed to be responsible for Morgan's death. After killing several of them, Earp and Holliday left Arizona, never to return. Holliday died of tuberculosis some five years later. Wyatt Earp lived on until 1929. Music includes the Wyatt Earp TV theme song, "Gunfight at the OK Corral," sung by Frankie Laine, and Spike Jones giving us "Wyatt Earp Makes Me Burp."
