Barnsley singer/song writer Mel Plant..Someone asked me if I could write a song about my home town of Barnsley, so I thought I'd have a go. It was written and recorded fairly quickly with just basic backing. Any way here it is...it's probably one of the few songs that's been written about Barnsley in Yorkshire, England. A small town with a history of mining...This song reflects how the town has moved on since those days..it's really a celebration of the good people who live here and their struggle to re-emerge from the destruction of the towns main employment...This is for them

I remember when she was, the king of industry
and the wheels turned through the day and through the night
and coal was in our hearts, like black blood in our veins
embedded in our skin and in our names
families born and bred, one after the other led
into the dark

Now after many years of trouble, all the mines are just scrap and rubble
and the whirlwinds of black dust no longer blow
and here in the yellow fields, overlooking the town
theres a spirit still survives, they'll never ever put down
in my little town

Now for many years the jobs have been gone
some people picked up and moved on
but the kids run and play till the end of the day in the sun

Where the scars of industry stood, now theres green fields and water and wood
and the people survived, cause they still have their pride around here
Must be the coal thats in their blood, that keeps them burning bright
like beacons of fire, they just wont retire to the night

And like the thunderous sound of the crowd
inside of the old Oakwell ground
let the cheers ring out for you my Barnsley town
my little town, my Barnsley town, my little town
