Teaching reading is a critical task for educators. Reading can be the gateway to new worlds for students and guide them on the path to success. Phyllis C. Hunter describes the skill as a new civil right. Hunter, a former classroom teacher and school administrator, shares her experiences and highlights the need for research-based reading programs in schools today. She also shares the importance for children to have solid reading skills by the third grade.

  • Absolutely, on the money, you are invited to my kindergarten class in Bushwick, Brooklyn where I am using sing spell read and write. Please come my kids are reading already, spelling and their handwriting is amazing. Come to PS 106K Christine Calabrese

  • Synthetic phonics is absolutely the best was to teach a child to read. One of the very best books for teaching kindergartners or younger is "An Ant - Learn to Read." It has all the basics plus really great stories with color illustrations. Kind of like a comic book, but much better!

  • Why is there no mention of how reading should be taught? All the experts I trust insist on synthetic phonics. Conversely, my own research tells me that Sight Words can not work.

  • Thank you for uploading from korea.

  • you are definitely right
