Take a little tour of the RESCUE CAMDEN EXHIBITION by Joleen Cronin & Siobhan Russell, showing at The Grainstore, Ballymaloe, Shanagarry, East Cork from the 5th -- 25th September 2011

THE EXHIBITION

Fort Camden (also known as Fort Meagher) is internationally recognized as one of the finest remaining classic coastal artillery forts. It is located on Ram's Head near the village of Crosshaven overlooking the entrance to Cork Harbour. This magnificent fort spreads over 45 acres, with almost 60% underground with tunnels, passageways and rooms.

Fort Camden is currently open to the public and more details can be found on their website -- www.rescuecamden.ie

This exhibition was photographed in 2010 by Joleen Cronin and Siobhan Russell and supported by Crosshaven Tourism and Cork County Council. The fifty piece collective captures in beautiful and intimate detail the abandoned Fort, which has ravished by time.

Already this showcase has captured a piece of history as the fort has significantly changed with the work of volunteers who are now bringing the historic grounds back to life.

It will be on display in the Grainstore at Ballymaloe from 5th -- 20th September 2011.

"Photography has always been a passion of mine. I find it both challenging and very rewarding to capture the spirit and essence of a place, a person or just a moment in time.

Documenting the abandoned buildings, tunnels and passageways of Fort Camden has given me a greater appreciation of our history and culture. I am excited about the images being shared and hope they will make a positive impact towards the restoration of this important cultural and heritage site."

Siobhan Russell, mother, wife and freelance photographer comes from a background of industrial photography and has graduated from the Crawford College of Art and Design with a BA in Photography and Fine Art.

"I love to capture the form and lines of old buildings, and derelict spaces. They have a history of achievement and failure.

In the case of Fort Camden, I am especially fond of the underground engine-room tunnels with details such as the old tiled floors and walls, domed ceilings, rusted windows and the oil storage tanks. A lot of my work down there was performed in pitch-darkness, the only light source being wedges of sun-light beaming through shafts in the ceilings. The darkness and quiet down there is humbling."
