This is a fossil stump that I am hoping to identify. Also seen is a geode I dug up while in Iowa ... a Keokuk Geode - Iowa state rock. If you can help with identifying this "stump" I would be very happy.

  • @udchem ... actually I sent samples off to University of Tennessee already. Due to the crystallization the professors were not able to come to any definitive conclusion. About 2 months ago I was also contacted by and individual who offered to purchase the specimen along with all the smaller pieces that were found with it. It was not possible to obtain a slice that reveled any growth rings, again due to the crystallized state. In Iowa there are only a few formations, most are glacial flows.

  • If you can help by providing the name of the rock formation which it was pulled from, I may be able to help you identify it. If you don't know what rock formation it was from, then download a geologic map of your state and check what layer is shown at the location you found it. More helpful would be a picture of the specimen end on (in cross section). Viewed from the side, you really can't tell all that much.
