The Making of "Datura"

Watch the process of making "Datura" for the Franklin Park Conservatory unfold from drawings, models and fabrication.
The Datura, a member of the nightshade family, holds many common names because of its intoxicating beauty: moon flower, angel's trumpet and devil's weed. The night blooming, invasive plant has adapted to every environment including the himalayas. All parts of the plant contain alkaloids that have a long, colorful history, used as medicines, poisons and hallucinogens. This sculpture of blown glass and steel highlights the various stages of growth, bloom and seeding while featuring the characteristic spiny fruit, trumpet shaped flowers and toothed leaves.

@DDman465 Datura is a weed. It reproduces from its roots and seeds. You shouldn't have as much trouble growing it as preventing it from taking over everything! :)

Datura contains the active ingredient atropine. Atropine is an important drug in medicine. Like any medicine, it is beneficial in the right dose, toxic with too high a dose. This sculpture celebrates the dual nature of this plant.
