I dislike much Wagner but hearing this I have to agree with Pollione88 much of my dislike may stem from performer's misconceptions about how it should be sung. Also, I prefer Wagner when he doesn't try so hard with his never ending melody technique - in this, he isn't reluctant to approach some half and full cadences (granted rather novel ones at times) some it is quite Schubertian - just blown up to a large scale.

Genau so sollte diese Arie gesungen werden - das ist immerhin ein Gebet! Die meisten sogenannten Heldentenöre verklemmen sich stattdessen ihren Stiernacken dabei . und das hört man dann auch am Text, bei dem alle Vokale sich immer mehr gleichen. Zum Glück fällt Smith nicht in diese Falle! Danke für eine kultivierte und inbrünstige Interpretation!

People who criticise this aren't used to voices singing Wagner tenderly and expect the music to be shouted. Wagner is only beautiful if it is sung with taste and control, that's why this is beautiful. That's why it sounds near effortless too.
