  • President Eisenhower shouldn't have stepped into the Suez situation. A lot of Middle East problems would have been solved if President Nassar would have been knocked out of power in 1956.

  • The best, honest and courageous address to the nation from any political leader in Britain - Gaitskell was the best prime minister we never had.

  • @mboudu Eden responded rightly to Suez.

  • @kjevvv123 Couldn't agree more, certainly a finer man than that fudger Wilson. 30 years of left-right extremism and trade union obstruction could have been avoided had Gaitskell lived to do his 'Nixon in China' moment and calmed the TUC. Britain is lesser place without him.

  • I think this is what is known as an "opposition".

  • The most honest, intelligent and humane broadcast by any British political leader in hostile circumsatnces - Gaitskell was the tragic loss for so many in the UK.

  • That has got to be the most depressing party political broadcasts I have ever heard. No wonder they were hammered in 1959

  • the labour opposition famously, and remarkably, opposed the government's military adventure (with israel and france); if only the democrats would do the same. suez destroyed britain's reputation, as iraq has the USA's.
