@mboudu Eden responded rightly to Suez.

@kjevvv123 Couldn't agree more, certainly a finer man than that fudger Wilson. 30 years of left-right extremism and trade union obstruction could have been avoided had Gaitskell lived to do his 'Nixon in China' moment and calmed the TUC. Britain is lesser place without him.

I think this is what is known as an "opposition".

The most honest, intelligent and humane broadcast by any British political leader in hostile circumsatnces - Gaitskell was the tragic loss for so many in the UK.
-
That has got to be the most depressing party political broadcasts I have ever heard. No wonder they were hammered in 1959

the labour opposition famously, and remarkably, opposed the government's military adventure (with israel and france); if only the democrats would do the same. suez destroyed britain's reputation, as iraq has the USA's.
President Eisenhower shouldn't have stepped into the Suez situation. A lot of Middle East problems would have been solved if President Nassar would have been knocked out of power in 1956.

The best, honest and courageous address to the nation from any political leader in Britain - Gaitskell was the best prime minister we never had.
