doing this to a baby less than 6 months old has no long term effects.

My hubby and I took a newborn care class where we were taught the five S's of comforting a baby (swaddling, side stomach position, swinging, shushing, and sucking). The purpose of these being to immitate the conditions of the womb, which baby has been used to for 9 months. As baby ages, you gradually get her used to her new environment. Like taking one arm out of her swaddle after a month or so, until eventually she feels comfortable without being swaddled at all.
