September 17, 2010 - An unexpected business appointment, a snow day, car problems or traffic jams, a child care arrangement that's fallen through, or simple scheduling issues -- any number of circumstances could mean your child is home alone after school. And it's more common than ever.
For many parents this is a source of angst. When is our kid old enough to stay home alone? How can we make sure they are safe? How can we protect the house and other property? And how are we going to get them to be responsible (i.e. finishing homework, eating healthy snacks, helping, not fighting, with siblings) if we're not standing over their shoulders? Even the journey home from school is stressful. Are they safe walking home from school alone or, when they're teens, driving themselves?

A lifestyle/safety expert, Alison Rhodes offers parents insight on how to stay sane while keeping their kids safe when they are home alone. Here's a look at a few of her suggestions:

· Establish ground rules for your kids when they're home alone

· Talk to your kids about handling emergencies

· The five rules every teen must follow before being allowed to drive home alone or chauffeur siblings

· Important tips for making sure your home is safe when your kids arrive

· Safety precautions kids must know to walk home alone

· Easy ways to give you peace of mind when you can't be there
