In this video I show you the effect of air expanding when it get hot and contracting when it is cooled.
These are the forces that drive the Stirling engine and it's surprising just how quickly the volume of air can be changed by heating it and cooling it. The 'pop-popping' you hear from my wood burner is the natural resonant frequency the air assumes when relatively cool air is drawn into the red-hot chamber.
Don't for get to look at my very first video it has the rather long title of
'A Stirling Engine stripped down so that you can see how it was made'
And not 'Stirling Engine' as I say in the video, sorry about that.
Here's the link were I show you what's inside a Stirling engine and how it works
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idsmH1ar704 and if you like that you might want to get my free eBook

Thanks for watching and thank you for all the positive comments that I seem to be receiving, I do appreciate all the feedback and the 'thumbs up' as it lets other YouTuber's know the videos are worth while watching.
Many thanks and Kind Regards ... Andy

  • Nothing like a hands on experiment to demonstrate the principle.

    Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the positive comments; I think it’s important to give thumbs up to all of those videos that you like on YouTube as it helps both watches and video makers to know what’s appreciated and what’s not

    Thanks again. Kind Regards ...Andy.

  • 0:57 Fireproof hands, amazing!

  • @MrVinamp Hi there, well the fire had only just been lit a few minutes so the metal wasn’t too hot, after 10 minutes it’s dangerously hot but I fitted the Socket Cap screws in the roses so I can still open and close the vents with my finger when the fire is blisteringly hot but I have to be quick.

One day I might show some other hot metal working that will astound you.

    Kind Regards ... Andy

  • Ah I did wonder about that..how the door would be hard to open if I had to go back in to get something.... I see..sort of how the air inside a balloon contracts when cooled...but in the case of the fridge... the air inside creates the vacuum (so to speak) due to the contracted air.

Nice explanation Andy! For an engineer you have a knack for explaining things in a way we non-engineers can understand!

    :-)

  • @gardenvespers777 Hi there, how’s the bottling going?

Anyone who wants to see bottling and pickling of fruit and vegetables go and have a look at ‘gardenvesper777’ channel, she’s a bottling fanatic!

OK, I’ve had over 40,000 hits on my first Stirling Engine video so I guess the notion is popular and these two everyday phenomena should, I hope, help to visually illustrate what happens to air as it heats and cools.

Keep on bottling and giggling over there.

    All the best ... Andy

    Hi there,

I hope you find the book helpful it’s not intended to be design plans of how to make it but more to give an understanding of how I made one and to make one of your own design. If you enjoy it please rate the book on LuLu. (I think their site can be a bit tricky to use regarding rating unless things have changed)

    Have fun.

    Kind Regards ... Andy

  • Great vid Andy on the theory of Sterling engine principles. And thanks for the free book.
