This is a video I put together relatively quickly in response to YouTube user zackaks videos something on the moon and something on the moon (longer version). The videos show what appears to be a large cube shaped structure near the rim of a large crater. This is merely an illusion the object is simply the shadowed rim of the crater Clavius.

For both of the videos descriptions, zackak has stated that the object is indeed just the shadowed rim of Clavius and that there is no actual, physical cube shaped object. However, many of the users commenting on the videos insist that it must be a physical object. This video shows that theyre simply wrong, and proves that the object is nothing more than a neat illusion.

A quick summary of the video:

1. The object is absent in other images of the crater and under different illumination, the features of the rim that create the illusion are easily visible.

2. The direction of the shadow cast by the hypothetical object is inconsistent with the direction of the Sun. The shadow the object appears to be casting is at a large angle to the direction it should be going in. Rather, the shadowing is entirely consistent with that of the surrounding crater rims.

3.Crater Clavius, and hence, this object, is easily visible in even relatively basic telescopes. If such an object existed, every amateur astronomer in the world would be able to see and image it.

As stated in the video, all astronomical images - except zackaks lunar image and the various images within browser screenshots are my own. I use a 10 Newtonian telescope on an EQ6 mount and I use a DMK21AU04.AS CCD for image capture.

Much more of my astrophotography can be seen at my deviantART gallery, or here on YouTube.

  • Check out the same anomaly at a different angle and see if you don't agree there is something there. I have a Meade LX200GPS 12" With my scope you can't hide any Illusions with faint shadows, the object is there.

  • @99stargalaxy Did you even watch this video? I showed the same crater from different angles under different lighting conditions, showing definitively that there is no object there. It's just the crater rim in shadow. Perhaps you'd like to upload some images that you've taken and compare them to the examples I've provided here?

  • i agree with what you are saying but tbh, u cant be 100% sure that its the crater.. think about if the object really was there, maybe it just moved?

good evidence tho, and i want ur telescope! :P

  • Well actually, the fact that we can actually SEE that the object IS just part of the crater rim, yes, we can say 100% that it is just the crater.

  • kudos and subbed

  • @misterwolf29 Thanks!

  • zackak fuckoff

  • First, pause he video at 4:13. Ok now you can see that there is a object there because if you look at 4:13 the sun is shining almost at the top look aroud to the other craters and look at there shadows and now look at the object. There shadow is completly differnt now I prove my point.

  • COngrats from the moon, you got me!

  • Good demonstration. I thought is was a big cube at first but the shadow direction prove its not.

  • @ChrissyoSpace

    Good work...

You said that is 100% something of the crater itself but what about the shadow in the wrong direction? Was this added later? If this is so then the whole object will probably a fake...

But anyway... I have gone through many Moon and Mars pictures about objects and buildings so i look it up for myself... I gotta say that many people put to much fantasy on it and many are mistakes (by just looking at original pics) But some pics are indeed strange (especially Mars)
