@SLOPPYVOMIT -- Hello there, "disturbing on many different levels" eh? :-) Many may well feel your title is also? :-) But you do have my attention, by all means write me a personal letter explaining why you feel this as such a reaction to light hearted, innocent village fun and life, steeped in tradition and little bits of history does baffle me a bit and possibly I may be able to allay your fears? :-) I no longer live over there, but do miss a lot about it I must admit.

Why does the mayor have or get a pole?

No it's not because he is also a barber! LOL The French flag is aTri colour - red white and blue - the pole is also the same and denotes the place of residence of the Mayor.
